According to Robert Plageoles, one of the most famous winegrowers in the Gaillac region, the vineyard landscapes of Campagnac are certainly among the most beautiful in the region.
At the crossroads
Next to the Grésigne forest, at the gateway to the Gorges de l'Aveyron, a stone's throw from Cordes sur Ciel…Campagnac offers varied landscapes to travelers and hikers.
The village is typical of Gaillac. Perched on its hillside, it overlooks a valley of beautiful vines, like a shepherd watching over his flock. Every evening, the white stone houses light up in the setting sun and reinforce this unreal sensation of a village floating above the vineyard.
It is an ideal starting point for many hikes, on foot, by bike or on horseback. The valleys that follow one another in a landscape with colors of ochre and green will be the ideal setting for your leisurely strolls or your sporty hikes. The Grésigne forest nearby offers you the wilder setting of unspoiled nature, just as conducive to escape. With a bit of luck, you will make wonderful discoveries there like a pan-fried porcini or chanterelles. And if you listen carefully between September and October, you might hear the deer's bellow, this hoarse cry that punctuates the deer's mating season.
A rich wine-growing activity in Campagnac
Unsurprisingly, wine-growing activity is important in Campagnac and several winegrowers are to be discovered. Witness to an ancestral winegrowing culture, a magnificent dovecote sits at the entrance to the village.
On this subject, do you know why dovecotes are so numerous and emblematic of the Gaillac region? Don't see any compulsive ornithological passion in this! But pigeon breeding was part, in a very strict Middle Ages, of the organization of social castes, of the freedoms granted by counts and lords to everyone. Pigeon breeding thus developed, both for the financial contribution linked to the sale of pigeon meat, but also for the use of the columbine (droppings) at the time an excellent fertilizer for the vines.
