Tablette d'interprétation Castelnau-de-Montmiral, l'imprenable
Here, it's not just the view that's breathtaking, the village is too!
"Good men and women" were safe! They were able to resist the English during the Hundred Years' War, and later, the Protestant troops.

From this point of view, take the time to “read” the agricultural landscape of this Gaillac region; the crops and the forest create a mosaic of remarkable shapes and colours in all seasons.
Castelnau de Montmiral is one of the oldest fortified towns in the Tarn, these “new towns” from the Middle Ages with majestic arcades.
Imagine the central square at that time! Isn't that a marauder tied to the pillory?
This stone pillar supporting a cover exposed thieves, slaughter animals and adulterous women indifferently. One more glance at the imposing half-timbered houses, and lose yourself in the alleys, they hide treasures.
The treasure is there in the church!
A goldsmith's treasure: a 14th century reliquary cross encrusted with precious stones, offered by the popes of Avignon to the lord of Montmiral.
Do you know that this precious cross was almost lost forever?
During the Revolution it was hidden in a silo at the foot of the castle walls. Then…. It was forgotten. Legend has it that it was found thanks to the providential snout of a pig looking for its food.
