Museum d'histoire naturelle Philadelphe Thomas

We owe the oldest museum institution in Gaillac to Doctor Philadelphe Thomas. His museum from the end of the 19th century, with its cabinet of curiosities, offers his collections of zoology, paleontology, geology, botany and archaeology.
The curiosity of Doctor Philadelphe Thomas (1826-1912) is boundless. He devoted his entire life to gathering collections and documentation through his exchanges with many great French scientists of the time. Having gathered a considerable collection, he had a "house-museum" built in the district of the Château de l'Hom in order to share it with the public. Without descendants, Philadelphe Thomas bequeathed the beautiful institution he had created to the city of Gaillac. Today, the Natural History Museum is still the site of scientific activity and cultural and even artistic events.

The collections include a rich zoological collection consisting of more than 600 bird specimens as well as numerous eggs, nests, reptiles, mammals, insects and shells, …
There we can admire a beautiful collection of mineralogy, geology and paleontology.
Not forgetting a background of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman archaeology, to which is added the presence of the museum's mysterious mummy.
Finally, the gardens, which have been an integral part of the naturalist's project since the beginning, have recently been renovated. From an ecological and sustainable development perspective, they offer a tour of plants and vegetables in relation to climate issues, and offer a panoramic view of the city.

The “cabinet of curiosities” of Gaillac remains the only natural history museum in the Tarn department and one of the rare museums in the Midi-Pyrénées region.
