The Châteaux of Bruniquel: Classified historic monument. In the Gorges de l'Aveyron, in Bruniquel, one of the most beautiful villages in France, set off to discover the Castles: the Old and the Young perched on a rocky outcrop.
The Châteaux of Bruniquel are an open book on history; in fact, each century has left its mark: the superposition of interventions constitutes the essential charm of this construction, magnificently situated to watch over the valleys of the Aveyron and the Vère.
The visit includes several architectural elements from various periods: the so-called Queen Brunehaut Tower from the 90th century, the knights' room from the XNUMXth century decorated with twin windows, the entrance door and the carved wooden fireplace with baroque decor from the XNUMXth century Château Jeune, the Renaissance style gallery of Château Vieux overlooking the XNUMX-metre cliff and offering a superb panorama of the Aveyron valley.
The castles host four permanent exhibitions: one room is dedicated to the exhibition of photos taken during the filming of the movie “Le Vieux Fusil”. Indeed, these castles served as the setting for the filming of the unforgettable film by Robert Enrico with Philippe Noiret and Romy Schneider, one room is dedicated to prehistory, another to stone (stonemasons, sculpture), another also retraces the discovery of the Bruniquel cave in 1990. The information that we are about to reveal to you is not a secret, quite the contrary, it has been around the world! In the Bruniquel cave, 336 meters from the entrance, structures have been dated to around 176 years ago. This discovery considerably pushes back the date of human habitation of the caves, the oldest formal proof dating back to 500 years ago (Chauvet). It thus places the constructions of Bruniquel among the earliest in the history of Humanity. The cave is closed for preservation and to continue scientific research. There are also temporary exhibitions of paintings and photographs throughout the year.
The state room and gallery of the Château Jeune have been restored. Self-guided, audio-guided, or guided tours are available.
