Description

Simply out of passion or in the face of the observation of a climate change with a warming trend, some winegrowers have undertaken diversification, or sometimes even a reconversion towards olive growing. However, olive growing is not the same as vine growing. This is a major challenge because while some winegrowing lands are likely to be suitable for olive growing, the fact remains that its long-term profitability remains subject to the risk of a water deficit or severe frost, which is still possible in our region. This is a challenge that some have decided to take up, betting on a quality market, the craze for short circuits, low local competition and the revival of a somewhat forgotten method of cultivation.
The association of trees and vines, agroforestry, is an ancient practice that has long shaped Mediterranean landscapes through the trilogy of olive trees, vines, and wheat and which still persists in certain regions of Europe where cherry trees, peach trees, almond trees or truffle oaks are still associated with vines. Trees limit climatic excesses, improve the soil and, by bringing water from depth to the surface, also improve these water resources. They also create biodiversity that helps combat harmful species by sheltering their natural enemies.
